Information for prospective students
|
Thanks for your interest in the Land & Food Lab. I am always happy to hear from prospective researchers and visitors who would like to work with the Lab.
In-depth information about graduate programs in Geography at McGill can be found in the prospective graduate student section of the Department's website. Other information about graduate studies at McGill more generally can be found on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies websites, including this one for applicants. Interested students should read through these resources to learn more about the types of programs available. When inquiring about opportunities to work with the Lab, please be sure to include a brief description of your research interests, career goals, and ambitions for working as part of a collaborative team addressing interdisciplinary questions about food, land use, and sustainability. Attaching a resume or CV to your email is helpful, as is including information about any relevant coursework and GPAs in previous academic programs. I really value creative thinking and synthesis as part of the scientific process. I will therefore encourage lab members to ask cross-cutting questions and to form hypotheses grounded in a 'systems thinking' perspective. I also put a lot of emphasis on writing and science communication, and will invest considerable time in helping lab members to pursue their goals in these areas -- both as part of a degree program and to support broader careers in science. Describing your career ambitions is therefore a good starting point for discussing opportunities to work in the Lab. Your interests or experience with respect to research approaches could also be useful in this discussion; relevant methods include, but are not limited to: GIS, scientific programming (e.g., R, Python, Matlab), modeling, or statistics and quantitative analysis.
